Universiade: Italy claim medal after 49 years and it’s gold
Italy national team won the gold medal in the Volleyball tournament at the Summer Universiade after 49 years, and just like in 1970, when they also hosted the event (Turin), they won a gold medal. This time, they did it in Naples.
In a tie break against Poland in the final, Italy recovered twice to finish the tournament in a perfect way, recording 7 victories in as many matches: 3-2 (16:25, 25:20, 22:25, 25:23, 15:10).
Azimut Leo Shoes Modena opposite Giulio Pinali was top scorer for Italy in the final with 26 points, while Sir Safety Conad Perugia middle blocker Fabio Ricci made 6 winning blocks. Bartosz Filipiak, the new player of Trefl Gdańsk, was Poland’s top scorer with 22 points, while the new ZAKSA Kędzierzyn Koźle player Kamil Semeniuk served 5 aces.
In the bronze medal match, Russia swept France by a 3-0.
Fakel Novy Urengoy outside hitter Denis Bogdan was top-scorer for Russia with 15 points, while Dinamo Moscow newcomer Maksim Belogortsev added 4 winning blocks. Chaumont opposite hitter Julien Winkelmuller scored 11 points for France.
