Eurovolley Pool D: Czech Republic to 1/8 finals despite a defeat at tie break, Poland destroy also Ukraine.


Montenegro win 3-2, but it was Czech Republic that book their ticket to the eight finals in Antwerp! The match started very well for Montenegro, that claim first set 25:23. However, Czech Republic crushes their hope at the beginning of the second: Jan Hadrava, who has ended two matches in this pool with an ace, served an 8-1 run to open the set. It was enough, and the sets end 25:14. Montenegro make a good comeback in the first half of the third set and leads again: 2-1. The 4th set was decisive: in fact, winner of this act is the team that qualifies for the eight finals! Czech Republic close it with Adam Bartoš’s block: 25:21 and they claim 1/8 finals ticket! However, Montenegro still showed fight and gets the consolation prize with the victory, taking tie break 13:15. Montenegro ends with 2 victories in the inaugural appearance at EuroVolley. Jan Hadrava scores 39 points for the Czech Republic, while Milos Culafic scored 22 for Montenegro.

In the last match of Pool D, Poland used every player to take another straight sets victory, this time against Ukraine. The first set was a quick victory for the reigning world champion: 25:17. At 14:8 in the second set, coach Vital Heynen substitutes all 6 of his starters at once, but despite this, they manage to win the match and within an hour they finished their 5th victory in a row, losing only one set, against Estonia, in all of them. With that result, Poland is the winner of pool D, followed by the hosts of the Netherlands. After them, Ukraine and the Czech Republic will also continue their competition in Belgium. Dawid Konarski top-scored for Poland with 10 points.

We are happy we achieved this. We played pretty well, and we enjoyed the volleyball, which is most important. We have a lot of fans here, so its like playing at home. Next, we are playing in Apeldoorn, so we are happy we are staying in Holland.”
